Geez … Safari "locked up" when I was sending my answer a couple of minutes ago. Anyway, it seems to me that if you "slice" the cylinder lengthways and flatten it out you have a rectangle in which side A is 4 cm and side B is 12 cm with the "string" going from one corner to it's opposite corner. Having met good old Chief "Soh Cah Toa" many moons ago and remembering what he taught me I would submit 12.65 cm as the answer. 4 squared (16) + 12 squared (144) = 160. The square root of 160 is 12.65 and that's the length of the string. I imagine there are several harder ways to come up with the answer which probably means my method is unacceptable. Anyway, it was fun!
